私は言葉の語源についてよく書いています。語源と歴史を合わせて考えるのが好きです。今回も歴史と流行の繋がりについて書きたいと思います。今見ているパソコンの画面からちょっと目をそらせば、部屋のどこかにセロハンテープを見当たるはずです。セロハンテープは近代的で便利なものです。どこでも見つけることができます。とっても庶民的なものですが、面白い歴史があるんです。英語でセロハンテープは 「scotch tape」です。「scotch」はアルコールの種類でしょう？それか、スコットランドと関係ある形容詞でしょう？一体、なぜセロハンテープは「scotch tape」になったのでしょうか？

I always have a tendency to write about word histories, it seems. I like to mix etymology and history! This time, I'd like to write about the connection between history and a very common modern-day item. If you take your eyes away from the computer screen from which you are currently reading, somewhere in the room you can probably find some scotch tape. It's a very common item, but with a very interesting history. Specifically, why is it called "Scotch" tape? Scotch is a variety of alcohol, right? Why is it used to describe tape, too?

数十年前、私の両親が若かった頃、スコットランド系アメリカ人1世は「ケチ」と思われました。理由ははっきり分かっていません。その時代に「ケチ」という形容詞の代わりに、「scotch」（スコットランドからの）が使われていました。例文を作るとすると、「彼はケチだなぁ〜」は「He's so scotch!」になります。

A few decades ago, in my parents' generation, Scottish immigrants to America were thought to be stingy (I really don't know why). Therefore, instead of the adjective "stingy," sometimes people used "scotch." For example, "He's so scotch!"

セロハンテープが発明されたのは1920年ぐらいです。3Mという会社に発明されました。最初の実験で、セロハンテープの発明者は適当な接着剤の分量は分からなかったと言われています。どのぐらい接着剤をテープに加えるのが良いか分からずに少しだけ加え、最初のセロハンテープを作り取引先まへ送りました。取引先の人は送ったセロハンテープを「あなたのドケチなボスに返品してくれ！次回持ってくる時はもっと接着剤を加えるように！」と酷評しました。接着剤は貴重だったので、スコットランド人が作ったテープは接着剤をケチったのだと思ったのでしょう。

Cellophane tape (the technical term for scotch tape) was discovered in the 1920s by a company called 3M. At first, the inventors were experimenting, and they didn't know just how much adhesive to put on the tape. They put just a little bit on, and sent it to their customers. The customers complained greatly, saying "Send this tape back to your Scotch bosses! Next time you bring it, put some more adhesive on it!" Adhesive was a valuable material, so the customers evidently thought that whoever had made the tape was from Scotland, and being stingy when applying the adhesive.

それ以来、セロハンテープは人気になりました。接着力がそこま強力ではないのではがしやすいですね。はがしやすさのおかげで有名になりました。ケチくさいテープと思われたものが、結局ケチのおかげで人気になりました。

From that time, scotch tape has become very popular. Because it doesn't have much adhesive power, it is easy to remove from surfaces. It's become famous for being easy to peel. First thought to be a kind of stingy tape, it has since become famous for the very thing that made people think it was cheap and stingy in the first place.
