The Meaning of Carnival

カーニバルとは「謝肉祭」とも呼ばれ、イースター（復活祭）へ向けて禁欲期間へ入る前に飲めや歌えやの大騒ぎをして「食べ収め」をするという習俗に基づくキリスト教圏のお祭りです。
Carnival is known as a "Thanksgiving to Meat" festival. As Easter approaches, Christians traditionally enter a period of fasting. Carnival is a period in which to eat a lot and really enjoy yourself, before entering your period of fasting. That is the custom upon which Carnival is based--it was a traditional event in Christian countries.

ヨーロッパを中心に数々の有名なカーニバルがありますが、世界で一番有名なのはやはり「リオのカーニバル」ではないでしょうか。
There are many versions of the Carnival Festival in Europe, but the most famous in the world is probably the Rio Carnival.

去年はリオ・オリンピックで注目を浴びていただけに、今年は例年以上に盛り上がるかもしれませんね。
Simply because the Rio Olympics were the center of focus last year, this year's Rio Carnival will probably be even more lively and exciting than that of previous years.

「街では・・・」
In the City...

カーニバルが近づくと街中がソワソワしだし、人々はスーパーで大量のお酒と食料を買い込みカーニバル期間に入ると場所を選ばず、飲めや歌えのどんちゃん騒ぎです。
There is an air of nervous tension in the city as Carnival approaches, and many people go to the supermarket to buy vast quantities of alcohol and food. Once Carnival begins, people begin drinking and singing all over the place, just living it up.

「カーニバルには連も山車もある？！」
There Are Parades And Dancing Groups?!

日本の阿波踊りのように「スクール」と呼ばれる「連」のようなチームがあります。
Just like in the Awa Dance Festival in Japan, there are groups of dancers in the Rio Carnival (known as "schools").

セントロの一角にある「サンボドロモ」と呼ばれる全長約700メートルのパレード会場でグループが豪華で派手な山車と共に踊り歩き、ダンス、音楽、衣装、センスなどを競います。
In one corner of Centro, there is a 700-meter long parade area known as "San Bodromo." In the parade area, the groups of dancers dance, play instruments and wave fans while walking next to showy floats.

「カーニバルの王と王女には？」
The King and Queen of Carnival?

毎年選出されるカーニバルのヘイ・モモと呼ばれる王様には王冠のほか賞金30,000レアル（およそ100万円）、
また王女にはたすきとティアラのほか賞金22,500レアル（およそ80万円）が渡されるそうです！
Every year, a King of the Carnival (known as hei momo in the local language) is elected. He is given a crown, as well as a monetary prize of 30,000 Brazilian Reals (about one million yen). A Queen of the Carnival is given a tiara and a monetary prize of 22,500 Brazilian Reals (about 800,000 yen).
