オランダのWhit Sunday
今年2017年6月4日は、オランダでWhit Sunday, またはEerste Pinksterdagと表記される、聖霊降臨祭と呼ばれるお祝いをする祝日でした。とはいえ、この日付は毎年同じというわけではなく、今年は6月だったわけです。この祝日は"ペンテコステ"と呼ばれる宗教の祭典で、比較的大きなお祝いの日とされ、聖霊がイエス・キリストの弟子たちを訪ねた日として信じられて、それをお祝いする日です。聖霊による弟子への訪問は、キリスト教では大きな出来事だったのです。そしてそれ以来ずっと、今日までお祝いの日とされています。
Whit Sunday, or Eerste Pinksterdag in Dutch, is a Christian holiday celebrated in the Netherlands on June 4th, 2017. This date, however, changes every year. This year, the holiday falls in June. This holiday is part of a larger celebration called "Pentecost" which is a religious festival that commemorates what Christians believe as the day that the Holy Spirit visited the apostles of Jesus Christ. This was a major event in the Christian faith, and it has been celebrated ever since.
Whit Sundayの祝い方
世界中の多くでそれぞれ異なったお祝いをされている「Whit Sunday, ホイット サンデー：白い日曜日」ですが、オランダでは、家族みんなで集まったり、パレードが開催されたり、音楽コンサートを催したりしてホイット・サンデーを祝います。今日では、明るい春を思わせるような色の衣装に身をまとった子供たちがダンスを踊ってお祝いをする現代風なWhit Dayが主流になってきています。このダンスは、通常メイポール「五月柱」と呼ばれる色とりどりの、手の込んだ模様で施された飾りリボンで装飾された柱の周りを、子供たちが輪になって踊ります。
Whit Sunday is celebrated in many different ways around the world, but in the Netherlands, Whit Sunday is a day of family gatherings, parades, and music concerts. Today, the modern Whit Day is mostly celebrated by children who dress in bright spring colors and dance. Children usually dance around a maypole with colorful streamers. This creates an intricate design on the pole itself.

過去には、Whit Dayが結婚生活の終焉の始まりの日とされたことがありました。ある一人の若い未婚の女性が、群衆の中から選ばれました。この女性は、「ペンテコステの花」または、「ペンテコステの花嫁」と呼ばれました。以来、彼女はお花や冠で彩られ、その町や村中を気高く歩まれたそうです。使われているお花の中では、シャクやタネツケバナ(smock: ゆったりとした上着)、センノウが最も一般的です。これらの花の開花は、聖霊降臨祭の少し前かイベントの行われている間ということです。
In the past, Whit day was a day to begin relationships that may have ended in marriage. A young, unmarried woman, was chosen from the crowd. This woman was called a "Pentecost flower" or "Pentecost bride". She was then decorated in flowers and a crown and paraded around the town or village. The most common flowers used were cow parsley and lady's smock (smock: a dress) or cuckoo flower. These flowers bloom either just before Pentecost and Whit day, or during the time period of the event.
