アメリカで有名なことわざは、明るくて愉快です。これはアメリカ人の性格を表しているものだと思います。例えば：

アメリカの精神を象徴しているようですね。最近教科書であることわざを発見しました。私の子供の頃から有名でしたが、すっかり忘れていました。それは:
They seem to symbolize the American character. However, in a textbook recently, I discovered an American proverb that I had forgotten. It was popular in my childhood, but I had completely forgotten about it. It's:
"Curiosity killed the cat."
一体、どういう意味？！
What does that even mean?!
直訳すると、「好奇心がネコを殺しました」 となると思います。少し考えてみると、こんな風に文章を膨らませることができます。「ネコはすべてのことを知りたがる好奇心旺盛なネコでした。この好奇心のせいで、ネコは結局死にました。毒のある物をうっかり食べたとか、キラキラな海に招かれて水死したとか。物を深く知りたかったから、危険なものへも近付いていきました。」このことわざの寓意は「好奇心が多すぎても、危ないよ」と考えられます。これはあまりアメリカ人ぽくないですよね？
If we think about it literally, it seems like this: There was a cat one day, and he wanted to know about everything. But, because of that very curiosity, he died. Maybe he accidentally ate some poisonous stuff, or maybe he was lured in by the glittering waves of the ocean and drowned. He came into contact with something deadly, anyway, in his quest for knowledge. The moral of this proverb seems to be "Don't be too curious, because it might be dangerous." That's not very American, is it?
でも待って！続きがあるんです！
But Wait! There's a Second Part!
教科書には載ってないのですが、このことわざには続きがあります。それは「But satisfaction brought him back.」簡単に言うと、好奇心のせいでネコは死にましたが物を深く知り、満足したおかげで生き返りました。
I could not find it in the textbook, but there is a second part to this proverb. It's "But satisfaction brought him back." Basically, the cat died because of his curiosity, but he came back to life because he was just so satisfied with knowing.
前半と後半を合わせると、「Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought him back」になります。このフルバージョンは良いですよね？ネコは葉っぱの味を知りたかったので葉っぱをいっぱい食べていると毒のある葉っぱを食べて死んだかもしれません。しかし、味わうことができた満足感の強さで生き返りました。このことわざのフルバージョンの寓意は「好奇心をもつのは危ないかもしれないけれど、満足したときの喜びのほうが危険を伴うリスクより勝る」と考えられます。
If we put them together, we have the full version: "Curiosity killed the cat but satisfaction brought him back." It's nice, huh? Maybe the cat wanted to know all about leaves, so he ate a bunch, and he accidentally ate a poison one and died. But then, he was so happy to have satisfied his curiosity, he returned to life, magically. The moral of the full version, then, seems to be "Curiosity can be dangerous, but the joy of satisfaction outweighs the risk."
不思議なことわざですよね？私はこのことわざの元のバージョンはただ「Curiosity killed the cat」だと思います。でもそれは明るくなくて暗いので、いつの間にか誰かが「but satisfaction brought him back」を加えたかもしれません。パート1は古いことわざだそうですが、パート2は最近作られたものだと思います。私の両親の世代に、パート2が作られた気がします。
It's a strange proverb, huh? I think the original version was simply "Curiosity killed the cat." But I think, at some point, someone thought this was just too depressing and dreary, so they added "but satisfaction brought him back" as a second part. I think the first part of the proverb is very old, but I feel like the second part was added as early as my parents' generation.
