1年で太陽が沈まないがあるなんて想像できますか？何とも、スウェーデンの北部では太陽がまさにその状態になります。太陽が沈まないのです。
Can you imagine a time during the year when the sun never sets? Well, in the north of Sweden, the sun does exactly that: It doesn't set.
毎年夏になるとこの現象が起こり、6月にスウェーデン語でミッドソンマル・ストッグ「夏至祭」と呼ばれるお祭りを、スウェーデン国民みんなでお祝いをします。
This happens each summer, and Swedes like to celebrate the summer season in June with a celebration called Midsummer, or Midsommarståg in Swedish.

どんなお祭り？

この祝賀行事は、6月の19日から25日までの、必ず金曜日に行われます。メイポール「五月柱」を組み立てたり、ダンスを踊ったり、リース「花冠」を作るために花を摘んだりだけでなく、多くの懇親パーティーを開く人たちが夏至を祝います。
This celebration happens between June 19th and June 25th, and always on a Friday. Midsummer is celebrated by people having many social gatherings, as well as erecting maypoles, dancing, and picking flowers for wreaths.

メイポールは、色とりどりの飾りリボンで装飾された、ひと際高い柱で、人々はそのポールの周りを輪になって踊ります。
A maypole is a very tall pole, usually adorned with colorful streamers with which people dance around the maypole in a circle. Midsummer is considered a magical time for love in Sweden.
スウェーデンでは、夏至は恋の魔法の時間とされています。女の子や若いはそのポールの周りを輪になって踊ります。

女性が、その祝祭の帰り道、7つの異なるお花を摘んで、彼女たちの枕の下に置いて眠るとされています。その様にすることで、、その日の夜、夢の中で彼女たちの未来の旦那様と出会うことが出来るとされているのです。
Young girls and women, on the way home from festivities of the day, are supposed to pick seven different types of flowers to be placed underneath their pillows. If they do so, that same night, they will dream of their future husbands.

ブルガリアでは

スウェーデンの他にも夏至や同じような祭日を祝う習慣のある国があります。ブルガリアでも同じ風に、夏至の時を家族や友達と食べて、飲んで、踊ってお祝いをします。
Some countries other than Sweden celebrate Midsummer or a holiday quite similar. In Bulgaria, Midsummer is celebrated in a similar fashion with dance, food, drink, family, and friends.

しかしまた、ブルガリアの人々は時として、全く新たな次元の方法で夏至を祝うことがあります。裸足で灼熱の石炭の上を踊って夏至を祝う町があります。デンマークでは、決して勇猛果敢というわけではないですが、通常浜辺で、松明を持って、夏至を祝う町もあります。
However, Bulgarians also sometimes take it to a whole new level. Some towns celebrate Midsummer by dancing on hot coals: Barefoot. In Denmark, they are not quite as bold and hold bonfires, usually on the beach.
